Today, Paithan stands as a historic town in Maharashtra, India, celebrated for this remarkable artistry. The Paithani saree, commonly known as “pattan,” is a lavish garment crafted from silk and embellished with detailed gold (zari) work. Over the centuries, this distinctive art form has been shaped by the influences of various dynasties, such as the Mughals, Nizams, and Marathas.
The resurgence of Paithani weaving has been geared towards satisfying both local and international markets, catering to discerning customers in India and around the world. This traditional craft employs a simple weave method, yet its signature feature is the tapestry-like weft-firing technique used to craft detailed, intricate designs.
For over 400 years, the town of Yeola, Maharashtra, has been a major center for the production of original handloom Paithanis. Today, the majority of Paithani sarees are crafted in Yeola, rather than Paithan, and as a result, this product is now commonly referred to as Yeola Paithani. While historically, silk for Paithani was imported from China, both Yeola and Paithan now source their silk from within India, continuing to uphold the rich tradition of this revered craft.
